2009 HURRICANE SEASON CONTINUES TO GROW ANA, BILL, CLAUDETTE & GUILLERMO

The Atlantic Coast still seems to be getting a battering from the various tropical storms in the region. Tropical Storm Bill is continuing to grow with wind speads currently reaching 70 MPH and growing to Hurricane Force Winds by Monday. Tropical and Storm force winds are stil stretching out 140 Miles from the Eye of what will become Hurricane Bill 2009.

TROPICAL STORM HURRICANE BILL 2009

Closer in, Hurricane Ana has calmed down substantially and is now rated as a Tropical Depression. The wind speed of TD Ana is down to 35 MPH. Although this is an improvement from a few days ago, Ana is just behind newly formed Tropical Storm Claudette. Tropical Storm Claudette is currently heading for the Alabama Florida border region with a current sustained winds speed of 50MPH with gusts reaching much higher.

On her current path, Tropical Storm Claudette is headed NNW towards the Alabama Mississippi Border. Tropical Storm Claudette is expected to bring Tropical storm force winds and cyclones as far north as Tennessee and the North Eastern corner of Arizona.

HURRICANE ANA REDUCED TO TROPICAL DEPRESSION ANA

Tropical Storm Claudette is expected to cause a substantial amount of damage to the Florida panhandle as up to 10 inches of rain is expected along with 3 to 5 foot storm tidal swells. These swells will most likely be accompanied by Tropical Waves resulting from the winds of Tropical Depression Ana which is expected to dump up to 6 Inches of rain on the Leeward Islands, Puerto Rico and the US / British Virgin Islands.

TROPICAL STORM CLAUDETTE HEADING TOWARDS LAND

On the Pacific Coast, Hurricane Guillermo is expected to weaken although current sustained winds in the Eye of Hurricane Guillermo reaching a maximum of 85MPH which is up from the 60 MPH they were at this morning but down from their mid day highs this afternoon.

Tropical and storm force winds are still stretching out a moderate 35 Miles from the Eye of Hurricane Guillermo, which means Hurricane Guillermo is not growing in size.

HURRICANE GUILLERMO PERSISTS BUT WEAKENS SLIGHTLY

This morning the Hurricane situation has changed a little. It seems Tropical Storm Ana has calmed down over the evening with winds dropping down to 40MPH. Area's under a storm watch for Topical storm Ana include PUERTO RICO, THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS, MONTSERRAT, ANTIGUA, BARBUDA, ST. KITTS, NEVIS, ANGUILLA, ST. MAARTEN, SABA, AND ST. EUSTATIUS.

INTERESTS ELSEWHERE IN THE LEEWARD ISLANDS AND THE NORTHEASTERN CARIBBEAN SEA SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF ANA. ADDITIONAL WATCHES AND WARNINGS MAY BE REQUIRED FOR PORTIONS OF THESE AREAS LATER TODAY.

As Tropical Storm Ana MOVES TOWARD THE WEST NEAR 23 MPH...37 KM/HR. ON THIS TRACK ANA SHOULD REACH THE LEEWARD ISLANDS BY EARLY MONDAY. Aircraft reconnaissance is being sent to the area later today. Ships in the area of Tropical Storm Ana are being requested to check in every 3 hours.

Tropical Storm Bill, on the other hand, seems to be gathering substantial strength. An image of Tropical storm / Hurricane Bill, shows a definite eye. Winds within Tropical storm / hurricane Bill are reaching 60MPH with higher gusts expected over the next 48 hours. Tropical force winds are extending 140 Miles from the eye of Tropical storm / Hurricane Bill which is threatening to reach Hurricane status by Monday.

At it's current direction of travel, Hurricane Bill will be to the east of Puerto Rico by Wednesday as it heads towards the Carolina's missing the Bahama's and Bermuda. Of course, being over the open ocean, the current path of Hurricane Bill means nothing, a sudden shift could send Hurricane Bill right to the Gulf of Mexico

There is also a tropical depression building in the GULF of Mexico which if it follows trend will become TROPICAL STORM CLAUDETTE within the next few days. Current wind speeds of 04L or TD4, as Claudette is now known, are reaching a Max sustained: 35 mph. which is rapidly approaching storm strength. Aircraft reconnaissance will be sent in to investigate the potential of Tropical Storm Claudette or even Hurricane Claudette, although with there being no open ocean to assist in her growth, TD4 / Claudette will at most reach Tropical Storm Status.

Meanwhile, in the Eastern Pacific, Hurricane Guillermo is expected to weaken over the next few days. The Eye of Hurricane Guillermo is still approximately 1065 MILES...1715 KM...EAST OF HILO HAWAII with Hurricane force winds stretching 35 MILES OR 55 KM FROM THE EYE OF HURRICANE GUILLERMO AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTENDING OUTWARD UP TO 120 MILES OR 195 KM.

HURRICANE GUILLERMO IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 15 MPH...24 KM/HR AND THIS GENERAL MOTION IS EXPECTED FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS.

HURRICANE GUILLERMO

Hurricane Guillermo has formed far out in the Pacific Ocean.

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Guillermo's maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with some strengthening possible Friday. But it's expected to weaken Saturday as it moves over cooler water.

Guillermo is centered about 1,100 miles west-southwest of the southern tip of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. It's moving west near 15 mph.

FORECASTER ROBERTS/BEVEN

As the remnants of Hurricane Felicia drifted away yesterday,
HURRICANE GUILLERMO has formed and has the potential to bring winds and rain was heading toward the Hawaiian Islands.

As of last night, HURRICANE GUILLERMO was still approx 1,900 miles east of Hilo but
HURRICANE GUILLERMO is following the same path as Hurricane Felicia. As of 11PM the National Hurricane Center upgraded HURRICANE GUILLERMO to a Category 1 hurricane.
HURRICANE GUILLERMO's has sustained winds of 75 mph which put it just over the threshold.

HURRICANE GUILLERMO is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by the time it nears Hawaii. Hawaii Civil Defense vice director Ed Teixeira reportedHURRICANE GUILLERMO is weaker than Hurricane Felicia — which was a Category 4 hurricane with 140 mph winds at its peak — but HURRICANE GUILLERMO is twice the size.

According to National Weather Service forecaster Derek Wroe HURRICANE GUILLERMO won't have as much time as Hurricane Felicia to gather strength over warm water and is expected to weaken if it continues moving west-southwest toward cooler waters.

If HURRICANE GUILLERMO continues along its current track and speed, it should be within 350 miles of the Big Island by Tuesday, Wroe said.

Regardless of the lightened threat, Civil defense officials around Hawaii are on alert.

"We need to watch this one," Teixeira said. "We have to be on our toes and watch developments. ... If it's not Guillermo, it will be another storm system developing that could be a threat to the Hawaiian Islands.

"The forecasts still show this one ... moving into cooler waters and then weakening."

Cooler ocean temperatures weaken hurricanes. That's what happened to Felicia.
